What to expect

Clean, crisp beer that puts balance and a refreshing finish first. Lagers ferment with lager yeast and are usually kept cool during maturation. They can range from light and delicate to malt rich and dark.

How lager is made

A brewer prepares a grain mash, boils the sweet wort with hops, then ferments it with lager yeast. Many lagers ferment at cooler temperatures than ales and rest cold after fermentation. That cool period, called lagering, helps the beer settle and develop a clean finish. Grain, hop choice and resting time still leave room for many different lagers.

What makes lager different

Lager describes a brewing family, not one flavour or colour. Compared with most ales here, the key difference is the yeast and cool fermentation and conditioning. A light lager often gives malt and hops a quieter role than a pale ale or IPA. Dark and richly malty lagers also exist, so β€œlager” never guarantees pale or low alcohol.

What to ask for

If you usually choose a familiar light beer, ask a taproom for its house lager or pilsner.
