A better starting point
Ottawa has more good beer than any one list can capture. A name you know might lead you to a neighbourhood you have never visited. A small bar might put a local beer in front of you that you would never think to buy in a can. The fun begins when you stop hunting for the one “best” pint and start asking what sounds good today.
The simplest plan starts with a place. Pick an area that fits your day. Maybe you are already in Centretown, walking through Hintonburg, headed to Lansdowne, or visiting friends in Nepean. Open the map and see which brewery or bar is nearby. A close stop often beats a long trip planned around a beer that may no longer be on tap.
Ask one useful question
Once you arrive, tell the person serving you what you enjoy. You do not need a long beer vocabulary. “I like crisp and light,” “I like coffee,” or “I want something fruity but not too sweet” gives someone plenty to work with. If you are curious about a new style, ask what they would put beside your usual pick. A small pour or a flight can help you compare without committing to a full pint.
It also helps to ask where the beer comes from. A bar that keeps craft beer on tap gives smaller breweries another place to reach people. The tap list can change from week to week, which is one reason we put bars on this map too. When you find a local beer you like, you can follow the link back to the brewery and see where it is made.
Let the map do its job
Our brewery pins open short popups with a street address and a link to the brewery itself. Bars have their own colour on the map, so you can tell them apart at a glance. The popups stay short on purpose. Current hours, menus and beer lists belong with the businesses that can update them quickly.
For your first outing, try choosing just one or two stops. Look up the hours, decide how you will get there and plan your ride home. There is no prize for covering the whole city in an evening. Sit down, enjoy the glass in front of you and ask another question if you are curious.
